Ask if the business runs without you a while

This is a plain question worth sitting with: if you disappeared for an extended stretch, would the business keep running, or would it quietly fall apart within days. The honest answer tells you exactly how dependent everything still is on one person.

Most founders build a business that depends entirely on them without ever meaning to. It happens gradually, one small decision at a time, until stepping away for even a short break feels impossible. Calm operations means closing that gap on purpose, well before an emergency forces the question on you. I sit with this question myself every so often, and the honest answer keeps me focused on the one dependency worth fixing instead of everything at once.

Try this today: write down honestly what would break if you were gone for a stretch, and pick the single biggest risk on that list. Spend this week building a fix for just that one thing, so the answer to the plain question gets a little better every month.
