Your job shifts from cutting to directing
As more of the mechanical editing work gets handled by tools, the actual job of an editor changes shape. Less time goes into finding the right frame or removing background noise, and more time goes into decisions about story, tone, and what a video is actually trying to make someone feel. That is a shift in role, not a shrinking one.
This matters for anyone worried that AI tools make editors less necessary. I notice this most on my own projects, when the only decisions left are about tone and story that a tool was never going to make for me. The opposite is closer to true, the parts of editing that were always hardest to teach, taste and judgment, are exactly the parts that remain fully human.
Try this today: on your next project, notice which decisions you are making because a tool cannot make them for you, and treat those as the real work. Everything else is worth handing off so you can spend more time on the calls that actually matter.
