Automate reports before anyone builds them by hand

Weekly or monthly reports are a classic reason owners consider hiring, since pulling numbers together and formatting them takes real time even when the work itself is not hard. Before adding a person for that, look at whether the report can be built automatically from the same information you already track, refreshed and delivered without anyone opening a single file.

This matters because reporting is almost always the same structure filled with new numbers each time, which makes it one of the most automation-friendly tasks in any business. I stopped building any report by hand once I mapped out where every number in it actually came from, and most of that path turned out to be repeatable. Once the format is set up, a system can pull fresh information and hand you a finished view on a set schedule, freeing the person who used to build it by hand for work that actually needs their judgment.

Try this today: take the last report someone built manually, and map out exactly where each number came from, so you can see how much of it could be pulled and formatted automatically going forward.
