Delegate the outcome, not just the task
Delegating a task tells someone what to do. Delegating an outcome tells them what result you actually need and lets them figure out the best way to get there. The second version respects their judgment and usually produces better work than a rigid list of steps ever could. I try to describe the result I actually want now instead of listing steps, and the work that comes back is often better than what I would have written myself.
When you only hand over tasks, people follow them exactly, even when the situation calls for something slightly different. When you hand over the outcome instead, people adjust as they go, because they understand the actual goal rather than just the instructions.
Try this today: the next time you delegate something, describe the result you want instead of listing every step to get there. Let the person choose their own path and see what they come back with.
