Pick a boring first project on purpose

An ambitious first project almost always fails, not because you lack the skill, but because the scope is too big to finish. Too many moving pieces, too many decisions, too many ways to get discouraged before anything works.

A boring project teaches the exact same lessons with far less risk. The first tool I ever finished was almost embarrassingly plain, and I still remember how good it felt to watch it actually run. A tool that renames a batch of files, or sends you a reminder, or reformats a list, will still force you to learn how the pieces connect. When it works, you'll have proof you can build something real, and that proof matters more than the project itself.

Try this today: think of the smallest, most unglamorous task you could automate this week. Something you'd almost be embarrassed to mention. Build that first. Once it works, you'll have both a working tool and the confidence to try something a little bigger next time, instead of stalling out on the ambitious idea you started with.
